Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions and answers regarding the workshops of the UC Davis Bioinformatics Training Program. If you have a question and don’t see your answer here, please don’t hesitate to email us at training.bioinformatics@ucdavis.edu.

Are your workshops open to non-university attendees?

Our bioinformatics workshops are open to all scientists, both within the UC system and from other universities & industry professionals. Our goal is to educate on emerging technologies, and the more knowledge we can share, the better.

Can I get a fee waiver/scholarship/financial assistance?

At present, we are unable to provide any financial assistance for our workshops due to lack of available funding.  If that changes in the future, we will send out announcements for how people may apply.

Does my fee include hotel/transportation?

Registration fees for our workshops include light breakfast, catered lunches and breaks, but do not include hotel, parking or transportation accommodations. Those are up to the individual participant to coordinate. Our accommodations page has some recommendations for those coming to visit us from afar. Additional information about all-things Davis can be found at daviswiki.org.

I need an invoice for my records, where can I get it?

Registration confirmations and credit card payment receipts will be emailed automatically upon registration. If you do not receive a confirmation or it is incorrect, please email us at training.bioinformatics@ucdavis.edu. Proof-of-attendance may also be obtained at the end of each workshop.

I need to cancel. What are your policies on that?

Registrants are entitled to a 75% refund of the total registration price if cancelling no later than 2 calendar weeks before the start of a workshop. Within 2 weeks of workshop dates, no refund will be given. No credits or other arrangements may be made. In order to cancel, you must send a written request to training.bioinformatics@ucdavis.edu within the allowed time. (Note that you may substitute another person from your organization at no charge, but please advise us as soon as possible so we can update our contact records.)

How are lunches provided?

At UC Davis, lunches are either provided at the classroom or in a nearby location. The lunches are generally catered buffet-style to accommodate dietary requirements. Many of our workshop lunches are sponsored by industry vendors, who will also give a short talk relevant to the curriculum. Although we communicate dietary requests to the vendors, we cannot guarantee that all dietary requirements will be met.

Do you share registrants’ personal information?

When you register for an event, your email address is added to our outgoing mailing list. You will receive occasional emails announcing future workshops, seminars, etc. You may unsubscribe from the mailing list by following the instructions at the bottom of our Contact Us page. We do not share email addresses with other workshop registrants.  For workshops/seminars presented in sponsorship with industry vendors, including the sponsored lunches, we will provide to the vendor a list of names and email addresses of registrants who attended the specific workshop that included such sponsorships.

What do I need to bring to the workshops?

Most of our workshops require each person to bring a laptop with a functioning web browser. Laptops running Windows, Mac OS or Linux are fine. You may need administrator accounts on your laptop in order to install the software tools and packages necessary for working with the example data. However, some workshops are held in campus computer rooms, and do not require participants to bring laptops. These requirements will be clearly stated in the workshop announcements.

What’s the best way to get around Davis?

Bikes are the preferred method of transportation in Davis. There are other options though, which you can find on our Getting around Davis page. Visitor parking at UC Davis is currently $10 per day (taps.ucdavis.edu).
