From Bioinformatics Core

February, 2007

  • Bioinformatics Core is good to proactively involve with new faculty recruitments, especially the recent Network Biology hires.
  • Bioinformatics Core needs to work with other technology cores. Develop data analysis techniques and procedures that first focus on the technologies already exist in those cores.
  • Need to make it clear what the Bioinformatics overhead is for other technology cores.
  • It is necessary to have a continuous survey from users about core services. Since Bioinformatics core already have some users, it should start doing it.
  • It will be good to conduct a grant analysis to see which the market potential for Bioinformatics services it. There is one already done for UC Davis NSF grants. It is good to do that same thing for NIH and other agency grants. The one for NIH grants maybe useful to know more about medical school projects.
  • There is no objection to the current way how hourly rate is derived. The rate can be changed in the future if it is necessary. Current rate has considered the cost of salaries, benefits, training and development time, administrative overhead and supplies.
  • There should be clear indication in the service contract about intellectual properties.
  • The formula to determine if a staff from Bioinformatics Core is co-author is that:
  • If somebody has an intellectual question about the paper, the staff is needed to answer the question should be a co-author.

  • There are potential areas to collaborate with Cancer Center and Medical School Microarray Facility
  • Statistical expertise is needed in Bioinformatics Core. It might be a good model to have an experienced staff who can work on Microarray analysis. Such person can participate in grant applications as key personnel. This model works well for statistician.
  • It might be beneficial to develop usage model for computing resources at Genome Center for people who do not have sufficient funding to acquire large equipment.
  • Integrative Bioinformatics is an area worth exploring.
